An I2SysBio project promotes the CSIC's presence in major European R&D platforms
The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has awarded grants for Major European Research Infrastructures for 2025, which seek to position the organisation in European and international consortia carrying out cutting-edge research. Among the projects selected is the Spanish node of the Accelerator for Innovation in Industrial Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology (IBISBA), coordinated by Irene Otero-Muras of the Institute for Integrative Systems Biology I2SysBio (CSIC-UV).
The CSIC Major European Research Infrastructure Grant Programme seeks to position the organisation in European and international consortia, as well as to promote its participation in the platforms included in the European Strategic Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). In the 2025 call for proposals, launched by the CSIC Vice-Presidency for International Relations, four grants of around €100,000 have been awarded, one of which goes to the Institute for Integrative Systems Biology I2SysBio, a joint centre of the CSIC and the University of Valencia.
Spanish node of IBISBA
The Spanish node of the Industrial Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology Innovation Accelerator (IBISBA), promoted and coordinated by Irene Otero-Muras, a researcher at I2SysBio, is one of the actions that will receive funding to consolidate its participation in this European research platform.
IBISBA is the major European infrastructure (ESFRI) for Industrial Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology. It integrates infrastructures and laboratories from leading institutions in France, Belgium, Germany, Finland, Spain, Italy, Greece, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The platform was set up to provide a catalogue of cutting-edge services in biotechnology and synthetic biology, with the aim of promoting research and innovation in this field, as well as increasing the efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability of bioproductive processes, while fostering the transition to the bioeconomy.
The Spanish node of IBISBA is made up of the CSIC, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and Eurecat - Technology Centre of Catalonia. On behalf of the CSIC, there are 10 research groups belonging to seven different institutes (three of them in Valencia): I2SysBio, which coordinates the network, the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Plants (IBMCP) and the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA), as well as the National Centre for Biotechnology (CNB), the Centre for Biological Research (CIB), the Galician Biological Mission (MBG) and the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry (ICP).
I2SysBio contributes to IBISBA by developing customised models for the design and control of biocircuits, rapid prototyping of strains for biomanufacturing, and the development of yeast cell factories.
