I2SysBio commits to sustainability with a monthly challenge for its community
The Institute for Integrative Systems Biology (i2SysBio) has launched an initiative to promote more sustainable practices in its daily operations. Through the Sustainability Commission, the center has introduced the Sustainability Challenge, a program that presents its community with a small environmental challenge each month, from October to May.
The goal is to encourage more responsible habits within the institute's facilities, from using sustainable transport to reducing plastic waste. Participants sign up for the challenges of their choice and, at the end of the month, record their progress in a form, including a photo illustrating their participation.
Each challenge focuses on a key aspect of sustainability. In October, for example, the aim was to reduce the consumption of coffee in aluminum and plastic capsules, promoting the use of compostable pod coffee machines. In November, the i2SysBio community donated clothes and household items to support those affected by the DANA floods.
Other challenges include reducing meat consumption with "Meat-Free Tuesdays" in December, eliminating single-use plastics in January, and promoting composting in March. Additionally, in April, the institute will host a brainstorming session on how science can be applied to environmental issues, reinforcing the connection between research and sustainability.
To encourage participation, those who demonstrate a strong commitment will receive a sustainable prize in February and June.
With this initiative, i2SysBio aims to make sustainability an integral part of the institute’s routine, proving that small changes can generate a significant impact.
