Editorial news in evolutionary biology

The Casa de la Ciència of the CSIC in València hosts on Wednesday, April 19 at 6 p.m. the presentation of various editorial news published by the specialists of the Spanish Society of Evolutionary Biology (SESBE) Ester Lázaro, Juli Peretó and Pablo Vargas, with a dialogue moderated by Pau Carazo.
The SESBE is a scientific society that promotes and disseminates Evolutionary Biology in Spain in its scientific, technological and applied, and informative aspects. The SESBE pays special interest to the cultural promotion of Evolutionary Biology and its teaching. In that sense, the SESBE promotes this dialogue between members of society who have recently published books.
Ester Lázaro, from the Astrobiology Center (CAB, CSIC-INTA), presents “Life and its search beyond the Earth” (What do we know about? Collection, CSIC/Libros de la Catarata). The author, a researcher in virology, explores in this book a fundamental question since ancient times, the possibility of life outside of Earth, which has been reflected in numerous cultural manifestations, including religions, philosophy, cinema and science fiction literature. Science is no stranger to this concern and, since technology has allowed it, one of its objectives has been to investigate whether the processes that have led to the appearance of life on Earth could take place in other places in the universe.
Juli Peretó, from the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology (I2SysBio, Universitat de València-CSIC), presents “A creative planet” (Col·lecció Urània, Institució Alfons el Magnànim-Centre Valencià d’Estudis i d’Investigació). The author is a biochemist and in this text he presents the main scientific explanations about the natural emergence and artificial manufacture of life. It presents not only current ideas and their historical and philosophical background, but also provides anecdotes and experiences from more than thirty years of studying an issue as fundamental as the origin of terrestrial life.
Pablo Vargas (Royal Botanical Garden, CSIC), presents “Evolution in 100 questions” (Nowtilus Editions). The author is a specialist in plant molecular systematics and in this work he makes a complete evolutionary journey through 100 key questions. The most current scientific concepts and ideas are shown, how evolution is investigated today is explained and the still controversial aspects are also pointed out.
The dialogue between the authors will be moderated by Pau Carazo, member of the Board of Directors of the SESBE and researcher at the Institut Cavanilles de Biodiversitat i Biologia Evolutiva (Universitat de València).
Entry to the event is free until capacity is reached.
