The University of València (UV) and the Espai Ciència del Octubre Center de Cultura Contemporània (OCCC) celebrate Darwin Day with two conferences, on Tuesday, February 8 and Wednesday, February 9. Thus, on Tuesday at the OCCC, the COVID-19 pandemic will be discussed by Mireia Coscollá and Pilar Domingo, researchers from the Ramón y Cajal Program at the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology (I2SysBio) and on Wednesday, with the help of evolutionary biologist Carles Lalueza-Fox and at the Faculty of Biological Sciences, the genetic history of inequality will be analyzed.

Darwin Day (#darwinday) is celebrated every February 12 on the occasion of the birth of the English naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882), to disseminate his scientific legacy, which has had a great impact on the history of human evolution. Furthermore, Domingo and Coscollá's conference takes place within the framework of the week that is celebrated around the world on the occasion of International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Thus, the OCCC cafeteria will host, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, the session Living with the coronavirus, led by Mireia Coscollá and Pilar Domingo-Calap, and moderated by the journalist Reis Juan.

On Wednesday the 9th, at 1:00 p.m., the session Genetic History of Inequalitywill take place in the Charles Darwin Room of the Burjassot-Paterna Campus, taught by Carles Lalueza-Fox, from the Institute of Evolutionary Biology IBE (Universitat Pompeu Fabra-CSIC). This will take place on the occasion of the publication of his book Inequality: A Genetic History.

This activity has the support of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, the Catalan Society of Biology, Acció Cultural del País Valencià, the Octubre Center de Cultura Contemporània, the Chair of Dissemination of Science-Unit of Scientific Culture and Innovation of the UV and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECyT). Also collaborating are the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the magazine Mètode, the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and, on behalf of the UV, the Faculty of Biological Sciences, the Museum of Natural History, the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology and the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology (UV-CSIC).
