I2SysBio participates in the national biosafety congress

The I2SysBio participates in the national biosafety congress

Between September 29 and October 1, 2021 The V National Congress of the Spanish Biosafety Association (AEBioS) was held in Pontevedra. The technical laboratory staff of the institute represented by Consuelo Escrivá, Cristina Fernández and Julia Garzón actively participated in this meeting with a presentation on the sterilization of biological waste.

The Spanish BioSafety Association (AEBioS), founded in 2011, aims to establish a network of people interested in the issues of biological safety and the improvement of biological risk management. The work presented by the I2SysBio technical staff at the V AEBioS Congress addresses the problems associated with opening the bags containing level II biological waste to introduce them into the autoclave and guarantee an optimal result, which implies a significant risk for the operator. Likewise, different results are obtained when using gravity or vacuum autoclaves. In the presentation titled "Is it possible to autoclave bags of biological waste without having to open them? Validation of a protocol to autoclave waste bags with a minimum opening" an alternative to the most common procedure in biosafety rooms was presented by making cuts in the waste bags, allowing effective sterilization, but significantly reducing the exposure to biological risk of laboratory personnel. The topic raised sparked interest and debate among specialists at the congress.
