Mètode's publication 'La ciència a taula' wins the Joan Lluís Vives Prize for the best book on natural and applied sciences

The second edition of the Joan Lluís Awards Lives to the university edition, convened by the Xarxa Vives d'Universitats, has recognized La ciència a taula, the last volume of the "Monografies Mètode", as Best book on natural and applied sciences.
The institution thus values the editorial work carried out in this volume that includes a selection of the articles published by the chemist and popularizer Fernando Sapiña in his section on science and gastronomy in the Mètode magazine, also under the title “Science on the table”.
The awards aim to publicize the role of university publishing in the transfer of knowledge in Catalan and the value and quality of the work carried out by the university publishers of the Xarxa Vives. Furthermore, the awards seek to give prestige to the Catalan language in the university environment, in order to promote and normalize its use in the dissemination of knowledge.
A book to discover cooking and its science
La ciència a taula, written by Juli Peretó and edited by Mètode, brings together 42 articles by Fernando Sapiña on the physical and chemical principles of the foods and their preparations, accompanied by a culinary recipe. These texts can be read independently, or by discovering the subtle threads between them through the texture, color, flavor, smell or culinary transformations of food. In the book, Fernando Sapiña's dissemination vocation is also evident, with texts overflowing with literary references and everyday experiences, with family and friendly anecdotes. In short, a book to discover cooking and its science.
For Martí Domínguez, director of Mètode and the collection of monographs, «this award is a beautiful tribute to the figure of Fernando Sapiña and his informative work. The book combines substance with form very well and is a magnificent example of dissemination where scientific concepts are accompanied by a practice, in this case, a recipe that the reader can make. A very complete work.
Also important is the collaboration of the artist Teresa Tomás in this publication. In her interdisciplinary laboratory Palomita de maíz, Teresa Tomás experiments in projects in which gastronomy is hybridized with her artistic work. His are the images on the front and back covers of the book. As for the graphic design and layout, it was carried out by José Luis Iniesta.
Second edition and English version
As was already the case with his articles for the magazine, the book with Fernando Sapiña's texts enjoyed a great reception since it went on sale. Proof of this is that a new edition has had to be made. In addition, the work also has a version in English, Science at the table.
The success of this work by the magazine Mètode with the collaboration of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Valencia has also been possible thanks to the Center Cultural La Nau, the Language Policy Service of the University of Valencia, the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of València, the Department of Inorganic Chemistry, the ICMUV, the Gastrolab-Fernando Sapiña, the Espai Ciència-IEC, the Illustrious Official College of Chemists of the Valencian Community, Genofood and Darwin Bioprospecting Excellence.
