Liz Allen, Director of Strategic Initiatives at F1000 (a biomedical research services provider); and Michele Garfinkel (responsible for the scientific policy program at EMBO, European Molecular Biology Organization), analyzed on Wednesday, October 4, at the Science Park of the University of Valencia, the changes that scientific policy and communication are experiencing in the field of Open Science. The colloquium, organized jointly by the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology (I2SysBio) and by the Institute of Innovation and Knowledge Management (INGENIO) and with the collaboration of the CSIC, also included a round table on open science initiatives.

This image shows the poster of the activity on open science on October 4 at the Scientific ParkThe scientific meeting was inaugurated by José Pío Beltrán, institutional coordinator of the CSIC in the Valencian Community, who gave way to presentations by Liz Allen (9:45 a.m.) and Michele Garfinkel (10:30 a.m.).

The round table on open science initiatives, Starting at 11:45 a.m., it was made up of José Barrueco, Open Access project coordinator at the University of Valencia; and by Remedios Melero, specialist in scientific-technical information, legislation, copyright and electronic journals at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA).

Scientific communication is experiencing a digital revolution, which in turn is profoundly transforming scientific practices in journals, peer review (peer review), and in the data transmission process. These changes require transformations in the institutional environment in different areas such as reward systems and social responsibility.

Liz Allen is Director of Strategic Initiatives at F1000, a biomedical research services provider that supports the discovery, writing and publication of new scientific discoveries. Until 2015 he was Head of Evaluation at the Wellcome Trust, one of the world's largest biomedical charities. Over more than a decade at this organization, Liz Allen developed an infrastructure to support research governance. In 2014 she was appointed as an advisor to the UK government for the independent review of the role of research metrics in evaluating research (The Metric Tide).

Michele Garfinkel is EMBO's Science Policy Program Manager, where she leads policy research focused on biotechnology and scientific publishing. She is a fellow of AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of the Science) where she has been recognized for her work analyzing the social impact of molecular biology, synthetic biology and human genomics. EMBO's program also addresses topics of interest to scientists and policymakers, including research funding and the responsible conduct of research. Until March 2011, Michele Garfinkel was an analyst at the J. Craig Venter Institute.
